But what are golf wedges and what are the various types? If you don’t know which wedge you need for each shot, you could find you’re hitting the ball too far or not far enough. Fortunately, it’s easy to learn how to use golf wedges if you understand a few key principles.

Get comfortable while we learn more.

What Are Golf Wedges?

Golf wedges are clubs that are angled to help you achieve a higher loft. Rather than trying to hit the ball long distances, wedges are designed for approaching and playing around the green. They’re ideal for playing well-controlled shots to get you closer to the hole.

What Are the Types of Golf Wedges

There are 4 different types of golf wedges, and each has a specific use. Knowing which club to choose could help you dramatically reduce your golfing handicap.

Pitching Wedge

Sand Wedge

You won’t be surprised to hear the sand wedge is your go-to club if you end up in a bunker. You might have seen even professional players struggle to get out of bunkers at times, and mastering how to use this club can save you a lot of shots over the course of your round. You can also use your sand wedge for other shots even if you are not in a bunker, making this a versatile club.

Lob Wedge

Lob wedges for golf have the highest degree of loft. They are best for playing shots when you are close to the green, and they can help you get the ball high into the air. You are most likely to use a lob wedge when you want the ball to land and stick before you then use your putter.

Gap Wedge

Gap wedges fall in between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge, and you can use this club for an approach shot. You might consider a gap wedge if you are hitting the ball no more than around 100 yards.

Practice Using the Different Types of Golf Wedges

It’s important to know which golf wedges to use depending on where you find yourself on the course. A pitching wedge is ideal if you are further away from the green, while a sand wedge can get you out of trouble if you’ve found a bunker. Should you be confident of getting near the hole you could choose a lob wedge, while a gap wedge is a solid all-around club when you’re near the green.

Keep practicing with your wedges and you could see your golf handicap come down!
